This Phelps sheet is a 1902 edition of the USGS 15-minute series, printed in 1910, and the antique print survives in very good condition—never folded, smooth and flat, on thick stock, with only very minor collar blemishes and hole punches along the left edge. Covering the Finger Lakes country southeast of Rochester, the quad takes in the town of Phelps along with Geneva, Canandaigua, Clifton Springs, Manchester, Shortsville, and Gorham across Ontario and Yates counties. Surveyed in 1899 by H.M. Wilson and engraved in 1902, it records the region before the modern highway system, showing the overland travel routes, rail lines, and early placenames of the era; the reverse carries printed reference material on reading the map.

All known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are also shown, with exceptions in some urban areas, where only landmark buildings may be shown.

Maps from the 15-minute series for the continental United States are no longer produced or printed by the USGS and original prints are becoming increasingly difficult to find. They are a valuable historical record for an area, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
