First published in 1902, this USGS 15-minute topographic sheet was printed in 1931 and survives in excellent condition, never folded and only lightly age-toned, on thick stock with edge protectors applied. Covering roughly 12 by 17 miles in the vicinity of Portage, the quad area spans parts of Columbia, Adams, Marquette, and Sauk counties and takes in Briggsville, Big Spring, and part of the country around the Wisconsin River. The base was drawn from a 1900 field survey engraved in 1902 under geographer Jno. H. Renshawe, and the reverse carries printed reference material explaining the mapping program and contour reading of that era.
