First published in 1902 and printed in 1912, this Wilmurt sheet is an antique 15-minute USGS topographic map in very good condition, on thick stock and never folded, with smooth, flat, attractively age-toned paper. The quad sits in the southwestern Adirondacks across Hamilton and Herkimer counties, about 25 miles northeast of Utica, taking in part of the Black River Wild Forest and the country southward toward Gray. Surveyed in 1898 and engraved in 1899 under geographer H.M. Wilson, it records the region before the modern highway system, showing the historic travel routes, rail lines, and water crossings of that era, and its reverse carries printed reference material. The map area is flawless, with only very minor blemishes and hole punches along the left collar, and it comes from an uncommonly well-preserved collection.

All known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are also shown, with exceptions in some urban areas, where only landmark buildings may be shown.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the 15-minute series for the continental United States are no longer produced or printed by the USGS and original prints are becoming increasingly difficult to find. They are a valuable historical record for an area, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
