This USGS 15-minute topographic sheet is a 1903 edition, printed in 1909, and survives in excellent condition on thick stock – never folded, smooth and flat, with lightly age-toned paper and hole punches along the left collar. Set in the Thousand Islands of Jefferson County along the Saint Lawrence River, the quad takes in Thousand Island Park and the river’s channels, though the Canadian side of the sheet was left unsurveyed. Drawn from an 1900 field survey and engraved in 1902 under geographer H.M. Wilson, it records the overland and steamboat routes of the region before the modern highway system, and comes from an uncommonly well-preserved collection.

All known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are also shown, with exceptions in some urban areas, where only landmark buildings may be shown.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the 15-minute series for the continental United States are no longer produced or printed by the USGS and original prints are becoming increasingly difficult to find. They are a valuable historical record for an area, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
