This 15-minute USGS topographic sheet is a 1904 edition printed in 1910, and it survives in excellent condition: very lightly handled, never folded, and still smooth and flat on thick stock, with a flawless map area and only hole punches along the left collar. Set about 35 miles southeast of Syracuse, the quad spans parts of Chenango, Cortland, and Madison counties in central New York, taking in the communities of South Otselic and Cincinnatus. Surveyed in 1900 and 1901 and engraved in 1903 under geographer H.M. Wilson, it captures the countryside before the modern highway system, showing the overland travel routes, rail lines, early placenames, and structures known at the time. The reverse carries printed reference material, and this sheet comes from an uncommonly well-preserved collection.

All known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are also shown, with exceptions in some urban areas, where only landmark buildings may be shown.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the 15-minute series for the continental United States are no longer produced or printed by the USGS and original prints are becoming increasingly difficult to find. They are a valuable historical record for an area, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
