First published in 1952, this USGS 7.5-minute topographic sheet was printed in 1965 on thick stock and is in very good condition, lightly handled and never folded, with a flawless map area. Covering roughly 7 by 9 miles about 15 miles east of Phoenix in Maricopa County, the quad takes in Mesa and Gilbert, the Salt River, and part of the Salt River Indian Reservation. It shows Mesa when the city was just a few square miles, surveyed before the interstate loop system and when five miles of desert still separated Mesa from Tempe; this sheet comes from the vintage map collection of Art Christiansen of Tempe, Arizona.

A reddish tint is used on this sheet to indicate urban areas where only landmark buildings are depicted. Outside of those areas, all known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are shown.

This map is from the 7.5-minute series, the most detailed series that is widely available from the USGS. The 1952 Mesa map is a valuable historical record for the area. It contains some placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
