This USGS 15-minute topographic sheet is an 1898 edition printed in 1909, and it survives in excellent condition on thick stock — very lightly handled, never folded, and smooth and flat, with hole punches along the left collar. Covering ground in Allegany and Cattaraugus counties about 60 miles southeast of Buffalo, the quad takes in the city of Olean along with Allegany, Cuba, Weston Mills, St. Bonaventure, and part of the Oil Springs Indian Reservation. Drawn from an 1896 field survey and engraved in 1898 under geographer H.M. Wilson, it predates the modern highway system and records the travel routes, rail lines, placenames, and structures known at the time. The reverse carries printed reference material, and this sheet comes from an uncommonly well-preserved collection.

All known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are also shown, with exceptions in some urban areas, where only landmark buildings may be shown.

Maps from the 15-minute series for the continental United States are no longer produced or printed by the USGS and original prints are becoming increasingly difficult to find. They are a valuable historical record for an area, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
