This USGS 30-minute topographic sheet is a 1899 edition printed in 1933, an antique sheet in good condition on thick stock. It takes in country northeast of Butte in southwestern Montana, with the quad area spanning parts of Jefferson, Lewis and Clark, Powell, and Silver Bow counties and including the towns of Boulder and Clancy along with Basin, Corbin, and Jefferson City; portions of the Helena and Deerlodge National Forests and the Elkhorn Wilderness Study Area fall within its boundaries. Drawn from an 1896 and 1897 field survey, long before Interstate 15 was built, it records the wagon roads and rail lines that carried people through this mining country. The map area is clean with no markings or blemishes, though the sheet carries a midsheet horizontal foldline and handling wear through the collars, with two minor edge tears stabilized by archival tape on the back.

The Boulder 30-minute map shows cities and towns, roads, railroads, rivers, creeks, elevation contour lines, public land survey lines, county, state, and other administrative boundaries as they existed at the time of the survey in 1896 and 1897.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the USGS 30-minute series have been out of print for many years. They have never been common and original prints are increasingly difficult to find. For areas where the 30-minute map was produced, it is usually the first large-scale survey done by the USGS for that area. These are a valuable historical record, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent series’ and editions.
