This USGS 15-minute topographic map is a 1937 edition printed in 1949, and the sheet is in flawless condition — very lightly handled, never folded, and smooth and flat. Based on a 1934 aerial and field survey with S.C. Kain as geographer, it takes in Lake Frances and the town of Valier in north-central Montana, roughly 20 miles south of Cut Bank, spanning parts of Glacier and Pondera counties and reaching into the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. The lake gives the quad its name and remains its defining feature, set in the open country along the Rocky Mountain Front’s eastern edge. Because this print was never folded and lies flat, it would frame well for anyone with ties to the Valier area or the reservation lands nearby.
