First published in 1894 and printed in 1910, this 15-minute USGS topographic sheet is in excellent condition, on thick stock, never folded, and lies smooth and flat with attractively age-toned paper. It takes in the Cape May Peninsula from Woodbine south toward Rio Grande, with the quad area including Cape May Court House, Dennisville, Whitesboro, and Villas, along with part of the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge above Delaware Bay. Drawn from an 1884 field survey and printed decades before the modern highway and interstate system, it records the peninsula’s older travel routes, rail lines, and placenames, and the reverse carries printed reference material about reading the map. It comes from an uncommonly well-preserved collection.

BACKSIDE LEGEND
A map summary is printed on the back side of the Dennisville sheet similar to the one shown in the picture. It outlines the history, purpose, and status of the USGS mapping program at the time of the printing in 1910. It also provides instructions on how to read contour lines and a description of how they are used to depict the terrain. At the bottom of the page is a legend showing all of the symbols used to represent the cultural, relief, and water features found on the map.

This antique sheet is an 1894 edition of the Dennisville New Jersey USGS topographic map. It is an authentic 116-year-old 1910 United States Geological Survey print in excellent condition.

All known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are also shown, with exceptions in some urban areas, where only landmark buildings may be shown.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the 15-minute series for the continental United States are no longer produced or printed by the USGS and original prints are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
