This USGS 15-minute topographic sheet is a 1903 edition, printed in 1909, and survives in excellent condition — very lightly handled, never folded, smooth and flat, with light age toning and hole punches along the left collar. Set in New York’s Adirondack country about 25 miles south of Plattsburgh, the quad takes in Clinton and Essex counties and the community of Au Sable Forks, running roughly from Fern Lake to Lewis. Drawn from an 1893 field survey under geographer Henry Gannett and engraved in 1895, it records the region’s historic travel routes and rail lines as they stood before the modern road and interstate system. Printed on thick stock and drawn from an uncommonly well-preserved collection, the reverse carries printed reference material on reading the map.

The Ausable 15-minute map shows cities and towns, roads, railroads, rivers, creeks, elevation contour lines, public land survey lines, county, state, and other administrative boundaries as they existed at the time of the survey in 1893. All known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are also shown, with exceptions in some urban areas, where only landmark buildings may be shown.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the 15-minute series for the continental United States are no longer produced or printed by the USGS and original prints are becoming increasingly difficult to find. They are a valuable historical record for an area, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
