Printed in its first year of publication, 1905, this antique USGS 15-minute topographic sheet was engraved in 1904 from an 1903 field survey overseen by geographer H.M. Wilson. It takes in a stretch of Addison County in west-central Vermont, about 25 miles south of Burlington, including the towns of Middlebury and Vergennes and the community of Bristol, along with parts of the Green Mountain National Forest and the Bristol Cliffs Wilderness. Surveyed before the modern highway system, it records the historic travel routes, rail lines, and placenames of the area as they stood at the turn of the century. Never folded, the sheet is smooth and flat with a flawless map area and only light age-toning, and it comes on thick stock from an uncommonly well-preserved collection; the reverse carries printed reference material from the USGS mapping program of the day.
