Printed in its year of first publication, 1915, this antique USGS 15-minute topographic sheet is in excellent condition, having been very lightly handled and never folded, and it survives smooth and flat on thick stock. Covering roughly 12 by 17 miles of far northern New York about 10 miles east of Malone, the quad takes in the town of Chateaugay along the Canadian border in Clinton and Franklin counties, with the community of Burke within its boundaries. Engraved in 1915 under geographer R.B. Marshall and drawn from a 1912 and 1913 field survey, it comes from an uncommonly well-preserved collection, and the reverse carries printed reference material on the mapping program of the day. Its clean map area and flat, never-folded sheet make it a good candidate for framing.

At the bottom of the page is a legend showing all of the symbols used to represent the cultural, relief, and water features found on the map.

The Chateaugay 15-minute map shows cities and towns, roads, railroads, rivers, creeks, elevation contour lines, public land survey lines, county, state, and other administrative boundaries as they existed at the time of the survey in 1912 and 1913. All known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are also shown, with exceptions in some urban areas, where only landmark buildings may be shown.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the 15-minute series for the continental United States are no longer produced or printed by the USGS and original prints are becoming increasingly difficult to find. They are a valuable historical record for an area, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
