This USGS 15-minute topographic map is a 1950 edition printed in 1964, and the sheet is in excellent condition: never folded, very lightly handled, on thick stock, with a library stamp in the bottom right collar. Drawn at 1:62,500 with a 10-foot contour interval, it takes in the Effingham region of south-central Illinois, with the city of Effingham within the quad boundaries alongside Teutopolis, Altamont, Watson, Sigel, and Shumway across Effingham and Shelby counties. Based on a 1938 through 1950 aerial and field survey, it shows the area before Interstate 57 was built and before Lake Sarah formed on Blue Point Creek, recording the overland routes, rail lines, and placenames of that earlier landscape.

A reddish tint is used on this sheet to indicate urban areas where only landmark buildings are depicted. Outside of those areas, all known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are shown.
