This USGS 15-minute topographic sheet is a 1936 edition printed in 1965, and it has been kept in excellent condition — never folded, smooth and flat, on thick stock with a flawless map area and a clean collar. Covering roughly 14 by 17 miles about 60 miles northeast of Phoenix, the quad takes in the town of Payson and the country south toward Jakes Corner, with Sun Valley and Gisela also within its boundaries and portions of the Tonto National Forest and the Mazatzal and Hellsgate Wilderness areas. Drawn from a 1935 and 1936 field survey by geographer W.R. Chenoweth, the map records the Payson area before the Beeline Highway existed, showing the older travel routes, placenames, and the houses known at the time. This vintage sheet is a 1936 edition of the Payson Arizona USGS topographic map. It is an original 61-year-old 1965 United States Geological Survey print in excellent condition.

All known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are also shown, with exceptions in some urban areas, where only landmark buildings may be shown.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the 15-minute series for the continental United States are no longer produced or printed by the USGS and original prints are becoming increasingly difficult to find. They are a valuable historical record for an area, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
