This is a first-year 1917 print of the USGS 15-minute topographic quad for Christmas, Arizona, engraved in 1917 with fieldwork completed in a 1915 survey, and in good condition with a midsheet horizontal foldline and a light mid-sheet crease. Roughly 20 miles southeast of Globe, the quad takes in the Gila River corridor between present-day Coolidge Dam and above Winkelman across Gila and Pinal counties, and includes the mining settlement of Christmas along with portions of the San Carlos Indian Reservation and Needle’s Eye Wilderness. Mapped before the modern highway system, this antique sheet records the overland routes and early placenames of the district when the Christmas mining camp was in its heyday, and the map area itself survives with no wear or markings. The reverse carries printed reference material about the mapping program and how to read the contours.

A map summary is printed on the back side of the Christmas sheet similar to the one shown in the picture. At the bottom of the page is a legend showing all of the symbols used to represent the cultural, relief, and water features found on the map.

This antique sheet is a 1917 edition of the Christmas Arizona USGS topographic map. It is an authentic 109-year-old United States Geological Survey print in good condition.

The Christmas 15-minute map shows cities and towns, roads, railroads, rivers, creeks, elevation contour lines, public land survey lines, county, state, and other administrative boundaries as they existed at the time of the survey in 1915. All known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are also shown, with exceptions in some urban areas, where only landmark buildings may be shown.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the 15-minute series for the continental United States are no longer produced or printed by the USGS and original prints are becoming increasingly difficult to find. They are a valuable historical record for an area, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
