This USGS 30-minute topographic sheet is a 1907 edition printed in 1956, and the print is in excellent condition: never folded, smooth and flat, on thick stock, with a flawless map area and only very minor blemishes in the collar. It takes in the Tonto Basin region of central Arizona about 50 miles northeast of Phoenix, with the Four Peaks and a large portion of the Sierra Ancha within its boundaries, along with parts of Tonto National Forest, Tonto National Monument, and Theodore Roosevelt Lake, and the quad area includes Tonto Basin, Roosevelt, Sunflower, and Tortilla Flat. Because the base edition dates to 1907, it shows the Salt River Canyon free-flowing before Apache, Canyon, and Saguaro Lakes existed, tracing the historic travel routes and placenames of the Roosevelt Lake country as it stood a century ago. It comes from the vintage map collection of Art Christiansen of Tempe, Arizona.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the USGS 30-minute series have been out of print for many years. They have never been common and original prints are increasingly difficult to find. For areas where the 30-minute map was produced, it is usually the first large-scale survey done by the USGS for that area. These are a valuable historical record, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent series’ and editions.
