This USGS 30-minute topographic sheet is a first-published 1899 edition, printed in 1905, and it survives in excellent condition on thick stock, never folded and smooth and flat, with hole punches along the left collar. Drawn from an 1886 through 1896 field survey and engraved in 1899 under geographer H.M. Wilson, it takes in the Delaware Bay country roughly 50 miles south of Philadelphia, crossing from the New Jersey towns of Vineland, Millville, and Bridgeton over into Delaware around Dover, and includes part of Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge. Predating the modern highway system, the sheet records the historic travel routes, rail lines, and placenames of the bay region from Millville to Magnolia, and comes from an uncommonly well-preserved collection.

A map summary is printed on the back side of the Vineland sheet similar to the one shown in the picture. It outlines the history, purpose, and status of the USGS mapping program at the time of the printing in 1905. At the bottom of the page is a legend showing all of the symbols used to represent the cultural, relief, and water features found on the map.

This antique sheet is an 1899 edition of the Vineland New Jersey USGS topographic map. It is an authentic 121-year-old 1905 United States Geological Survey print in excellent condition.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the USGS 30-minute series have been out of print for many years. They have never been common and original prints are increasingly difficult to find. For areas where the 30-minute map was produced, it is usually the first large-scale survey done by the USGS for that area. These are a valuable historical record, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent series’ and editions.
