1964 USGS Topo Map: Mount Adams, Washington

$19

This 1:125,000-scale topographic map centers on Mount Adams, the glacier-covered volcano in southern Washington’s Cascade Range. Based on an 1907 edition first drawn from 1903 and 1904 field surveys under geographer E.M. Douglas, this sheet was printed in 1964 on thick stock. The quad area spans parts of Klickitat, Lewis, and Yakima counties, taking in the community of Glenwood and portions of Gifford Pinchot National Forest, the Mount Adams and Goat Rocks wilderness areas, and the Yakama Indian Reservation. At 12,276 feet, Mount Adams is Washington’s second-highest peak, and the hundred-foot contours here trace its broad ridges and glaciers.

FEATURES SHOWN ON THE MAP
The Mount Adams 30-minute map shows cities and towns, roads, railroads, utilities and energy infrastructure, rivers, creeks, elevation contour lines, public land survey lines, county, state, and other administrative boundaries as they existed at the time of the survey in 1903 and 1904.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the USGS 30-minute series have been out of print for many years. They have never been common and original prints are increasingly difficult to find. For areas where the 30-minute map was produced, it is usually the first large-scale survey done by the USGS for that area. These are a valuable historical record, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent series’ and editions.
