This is a joint USGS and Army Corps of Engineers 15-minute topographic map, a 1953 edition with 1956 revisions, printed in 1968; the sheet is in excellent condition, lightly handled and never folded, with a flawless map area. Covering the eastern side of Yakima in south-central Washington, the quad area takes in the city of Yakima along with Union Gap, Terrace Heights, Moxee City, Parker, and part of the Yakama Indian Reservation. The Yakima Valley here is heart of Washington’s fruit and hop country, and the map records how the city and its neighboring towns sat across this stretch of the valley in the mid-1950s.

This vintage sheet is a 1953 edition of the Yakima East Washington USGS topographic map revised in 1956 using aerial photography. It is an original 58-year-old 1968 United States Geological Survey print in excellent condition.

FEATURES SHOWN ON THE MAP
The Yakima East 15-minute map shows cities and towns, roads, railroads, utilities and energy infrastructure, rivers, creeks, elevation contour lines, public land survey lines, county, state, and other administrative boundaries as they existed at the time of the survey in 1952 and 1953. A reddish tint may be used on this sheet to indicate urban areas where only landmark buildings will be shown. Outside of those areas, all known structures (houses, businesses churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are shown.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the 15-minute series for the continental United States are no longer produced or printed by the USGS and original prints are becoming increasingly difficult to find. They are a valuable historical record for an area, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.

The map was photorevised in 1956. Any features that changed or were added between the original edition year of 1953 and the photorevision year of 1956 are overlayed in purple. The purple overlay provides an excellent view of the fast-growing and changing areas within the quad boundary.
