This USGS 7.5-minute topographic map is a 1981 edition printed in 1988, a never-folded sheet in good condition with only a light crease in the left third. Covering an 8-by-9-mile stretch of the Big Island about 9 miles northwest of Hilo, the quad takes in the Honolii Stream, part of the Hilo Forest Reserve, and a portion of the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge. Named for Akaka Falls, one of the island’s tall waterfalls along this windward Hamakua coast, the sheet maps the steep, stream-cut terrain that drops from the slopes toward the sea with 20-foot contours.
