Perilla Arizona Douglas USGS 30-Min Topo Map 1919 Antique
$57
Printed in its first year of publication, 1919, this USGS 30-minute topographic sheet is in very good condition on thick stock, never folded, with lightly age-toned paper and a red inventory notation in the upper right collar. It takes in the Arizona–New Mexico borderlands near Douglas in Cochise and Hidalgo counties, running from the Perilla Mountains eastward to the Guadalupe Mountains and Guadalupe Canyon, with the San Bernardino Grant and portions of Coronado National Forest within the quad; the Mexico side of the border is left unsurveyed. Drawn from a 1917 field survey under geographer R.B. Marshall and engraved in 1918, it records the historic travel routes, rail lines, and placenames of the region as they stood before the modern highway system, and comes from the vintage map collection of Art Christiansen of Tempe, Arizona. The reverse carries printed reference material on the mapping program and how to read the map.

FEATURES SHOWN ON THE MAP
The Perilla 30-minute map shows cities and towns, roads, railroads, rivers, creeks, elevation contour lines, public land survey lines, county, state, and other administrative boundaries as they existed at the time of the survey in 1917.
A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the USGS 30-minute series have been out of print for many years. They have never been common and original prints are increasingly difficult to find. For areas where the 30-minute map was produced, it is usually the first large-scale survey done by the USGS for that area. These are a valuable historical record, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent series’ and editions.
