First published in 1932, this USGS 30-minute topographic sheet was printed in 1965 on thick stock and is in excellent condition: never folded, smooth and flat, with a flawless map area and a clean collar free of markings or wear. The quad sits about 30 miles south of Flagstaff and takes in Camp Verde, Cottonwood, and Sedona, along with portions of the Coconino and Prescott National Forests, Montezuma Castle National Monument, and the Camp Verde Indian Reservation. Surveyed in 1931 and 1932 by W.G. Carson before the modern highway system, it captures the present-day I-17 corridor from Camp Verde to Munds Park with its older travel routes and placenames, and shows Sedona when it was a cluster of fifteen houses on Oak Creek. This sheet comes from the vintage map collection of Art Christiansen of Tempe, Arizona.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the USGS 30-minute series have been out of print for many years. They have never been common and original prints are increasingly difficult to find. For areas where the 30-minute map was produced, it is usually the first large-scale survey done by the USGS for that area. These are a valuable historical record, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent series’ and editions.
