This USGS 15-minute topographic map is a 1954 edition, printed in 1955, and the sheet is in excellent condition – lightly handled, never folded, and printed on thick stock that has kept it smooth and flat. It takes in the Chocolate Mountains and Castle Dome Plain along the lower Colorado River about 30 miles northeast of Yuma, where the quad crosses the Arizona-California line and includes parts of the Kofa and Imperial National Wildlife Refuges and the Kofa Wilderness. The desert ranges and open plain make this one of the emptier stretches of the Sonoran backcountry, drawn from a 1934 and 1935 aerial and field survey. This sheet comes from the vintage map collection of Art Christiansen of Tempe, Arizona.
