This is a 1903 edition of the USGS 30-minute Yuma quad, printed in 1954 on thick stock and kept in excellent condition, lightly handled and never folded aside from very minor wear along the collar and an inventory stamp in the southeast corner of the map area. Straddling the California-Arizona line along the Lower Colorado River, the quad area takes in Yuma and San Luis along with Somerton, Winterhaven, Gadsden, and Andrade, plus portions of the Fort Yuma and Cocopah Indian Reservations and the Picacho Peak and Little Picacho Wilderness areas. Surveyed in 1902 and 1903 under geographer R.U. Goode, it captures the region before the modern highway system, recording the old travel routes, mines, rail lines, and placenames of the era; this sheet comes from the vintage map collection of Art Christiansen of Tempe, Arizona.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the USGS 30-minute series have been out of print for many years. They have never been common and original prints are increasingly difficult to find. For areas where the 30-minute map was produced, it is usually the first large-scale survey done by the USGS for that area. These are a valuable historical record, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent series’ and editions.
