This is a 1906 edition of the Romulus quadrangle, a 15-minute USGS topographic sheet printed in 1926 and in excellent condition, never folded and virtually unhandled. The quad sits southwest of Detroit and takes in the towns and communities of the lower Downriver area, with Taylor, Romulus, Woodhaven, Flat Rock, Belleville, Rockwood, and New Boston all falling within its boundaries. Engraved in 1906 under geographer H.M. Wilson from a 1903 field survey, it shows this stretch of Wayne and Monroe counties in the years before the suburban buildout that later filled the ground between Detroit and the River Raisin. Having never been folded, the sheet has stayed flat, with a flawless map area and only a very light stain along the lower left collar. The reverse carries printed reference material explaining the mapping program and how to read the map’s contours and symbols.

BACKSIDE LEGEND
A map summary is printed on the back side of the Romulus sheet similar to the one shown in the picture. It outlines the history, purpose, and status of the USGS mapping program at the time of the printing in 1926. At the bottom of the page is a legend showing all of the symbols used to represent the cultural, relief, and water features found on the map.

All known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are also shown, with exceptions in some urban areas, where only landmark buildings may be shown.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the 15-minute series for the continental United States are no longer produced or printed by the USGS and original prints are becoming increasingly difficult to find. They are a valuable historical record for an area, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
