This USGS 7.5-minute topographic sheet is a 1929 edition printed in 1942, in very good condition on thick stock and never folded, with a map area showing no wear or markings and only very minor blemishes. It takes in the Richgrove area of the San Joaquin Valley, straddling the Kern and Tulare county line about 30 miles north of Bakersfield, with a fine 5-foot contour interval detailing the valley floor. Drawn from a 1926 field survey by geographer A.B. Searle, it records the area before the modern road system, marking schools, rail lines, early placenames, and the ranches and structures known at the time. The reverse carries printed reference material on reading the map. Having been kept lightly handled and unfolded, this antique sheet would frame well.

All known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are also shown, with exceptions in some urban areas, where only landmark buildings may be shown.

This map is from the 7.5-minute series, the most detailed series that is widely available from the USGS. The 1929 Richgrove map is a valuable historical record for the area. It contains some placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
