This antique USGS topographic map is a 1933 edition printed in 1941, on thick stock and in very good condition – never folded, with lightly age-toned paper and no wear in the map area. Covering roughly seven by nine miles northwest of Bakersfield in Kern County, the quad takes in Rosedale, Shafter, and the community of Greenacres across the farm country of the southern San Joaquin Valley. Surveyed in 1929 and 1930 when Rosedale was only about a dozen houses, the sheet records the area’s rail lines, original canal and lateral alignments, early placenames, and the schools, churches, and structures known at the time.

The Rosedale 7.5-minute map shows cities and towns, roads, paths, railroads, rivers, creeks, elevation contour lines, public land survey lines, county, state, and other administrative boundaries as they existed at the time of the survey in 1929 and 1930. All known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are also shown, with exceptions in some urban areas, where only landmark buildings may be shown.

This map is from the 7.5-minute series, the most detailed series that is widely available from the USGS. The 1933 Rosedale map is a valuable historical record for the area. It contains some placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
