Set about 15 miles southwest of Farmington, the quad takes in Ironton, Pilot Knob, Arcadia, and Iron Mountain Lake across Iron, Madison, St. Francois, and Washington counties, along with part of the Mark Twain National Forest. The place names here trace the old iron-mining country of southeastern Missouri, where Pilot Knob and Iron Mountain gave the region its name and its industry.
