This is a USGS Reconnaissance Topo Map on the 30-minute series, a first-published 1891 edition printed in 1917, and the sheet is in good condition on thick stock, never folded though moderately handled. Its coverage takes in a wide stretch of southeastern Kentucky’s mountain country, with the quad area including Manchester, McKee, Annville, and Booneville along with parts of the Daniel Boone National Forest and its Redbird Purchase Unit across Clay, Jackson, Owsley, and neighboring counties. The map carries the name of Henry Gannett, chief geographer of the USGS, whose survey work in 1887 and 1888 underlies this early reconnaissance mapping of the Cumberland foothills. The map area itself shows no wear, no markings, and no blemishes, with the age discoloration and repaired edge tears confined to the collars.

The Manchester 30-minute map shows cities and towns, roads, railroads, rivers, creeks, elevation contour lines, public land survey lines, county, state, and other administrative boundaries as they existed at the time of the survey in 1887 and 1888.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the USGS 30-minute series have been out of print for many years. They have never been common and original prints are increasingly difficult to find. For areas where the 30-minute map was produced, it is usually the first large-scale survey done by the USGS for that area. These are a valuable historical record, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent series’ and editions.
