First published in 1899, this Salyersville sheet was printed in 1918 and survives in good condition on thick stock, never folded though moderately handled, with considerable wear and discoloration in the top collar where the largest edge tears have been carefully stabilized with archival tape on the back. The 30-minute quad takes in a stretch of eastern Kentucky about 70 miles east of Lexington, including the towns of West Liberty, Jackson, and Salyersville along with portions of Daniel Boone National Forest and smaller communities like Vancleve and White Oak. Surveyed in the field in 1889 and 1897 under geographer H.M. Wilson and drawn at 1:125,000 with 100-foot contours, it records the ridges and creek valleys of this hilly Appalachian country as they were mapped at the close of the nineteenth century.

The Salyersville 30-minute map shows cities and towns, roads, railroads, rivers, creeks, elevation contour lines, public land survey lines, county, state, and other administrative boundaries as they existed at the time of the survey in 1889 and 1897.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the USGS 30-minute series have been out of print for many years. They have never been common and original prints are increasingly difficult to find. For areas where the 30-minute map was produced, it is usually the first large-scale survey done by the USGS for that area. These are a valuable historical record, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent series’ and editions.
