Printed in its year of first publication, 1903, this USGS 15-minute topographic sheet is in very good condition, lightly handled with midsheet horizontal and vertical foldlines and subtle age-toning along the folds. It takes in a stretch of the San Gabriel Mountains about 30 miles northeast of Los Angeles, within Los Angeles County, and its boundaries include portions of the Angeles National Forest along with the rugged terrain of the Sheep Mountain and San Gabriel Wilderness areas. Engraved in 1902 under geographer R.U. Goode and drawn from field survey work of 1899 and 1900, the sheet maps this steep backcountry with 50-foot contours at a time when the range was among the earliest ground the USGS charted in Southern California, and it is printed on thick stock that has held up well over more than a century. The reverse carries printed reference material explaining the mapping program and how to read the contour lines.

The Rock Creek 15-minute map shows cities and towns, roads, railroads, rivers, creeks, elevation contour lines, public land survey lines, county, state, and other administrative boundaries as they existed at the time of the survey in 1899 and 1900. All known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are also shown, with exceptions in some urban areas, where only landmark buildings may be shown.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the 15-minute series for the continental United States are no longer produced or printed by the USGS and original prints are becoming increasingly difficult to find. They are a valuable historical record for an area, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
