First published in 1903, this USGS 15-minute topographic sheet was printed in 1917 and survives in very good condition on nicely age-toned paper, never folded though now fragile with age and carefully packed for shipping. Covering an area about 35 miles east of Los Angeles, the quad takes in a stretch of the Inland Empire including Pomona, Ontario, Chino, and Rancho Cucamonga, with portions of the San Bernardino and Angeles National Forests reaching into the mountainous north. Surveyed in 1894 under Henry Gannett, it records the region from Pomona to Etiwanda and south to Chino as it stood before the modern interstate system, showing the historic travel routes, rail lines, placenames, and houses known at the time.
