This USGS 15-minute topographic sheet is a 1908 edition, printed in 1931, and survives in very good condition, never folded and only lightly handled. Covering the Sumas quad in Whatcom County near the Canadian border, the area takes in the town of Sumas along with Everson, Nooksack, Lynden, and Deming, with part of Bellingham reaching in from the southwest. Engraved in 1908 under geographer E.M. Douglas from a 1906 field survey, it records the Nooksack River valley and its farming communities as they stood in the early twentieth century, and the reverse carries printed reference material on reading the map. The map area shows no wear or markings, and an inventory stamp appears on the lower collar.

BACKSIDE LEGEND
A map summary is printed on the back side of the Sumas sheet similar to the one shown in the picture. It outlines the history, purpose, and status of the USGS mapping program at the time of the printing in 1931. At the bottom of the page is a legend showing all of the symbols used to represent the cultural, relief, and water features found on the map.

All known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are also shown, with exceptions in some urban areas, where only landmark buildings may be shown.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the 15-minute series for the continental United States are no longer produced or printed by the USGS and original prints are becoming increasingly difficult to find. They are a valuable historical record for an area, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
