This USGS/Army Corps of Engineers topographic sheet is a 1953 edition, printed in 1959, in very good condition on thick stock. Covering an 8-by-9-mile stretch of Bexar County southeast of San Antonio, the quad area takes in the communities of Southton and Earle along with the southern reaches of the city. Surveyed by aerial and field methods in 1952 and 1953, it records the area before the southeastward spread of San Antonio’s suburbs and the modern freeway system, when the land was still largely woods and fields. Lightly handled and never folded, with a flawless map area and a clean collar free of markings and edge tears, the sheet lies flat for framing.

A reddish tint is used on this sheet to indicate urban areas where only landmark buildings are depicted. Outside of those areas, all known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are shown.

This map is from the 7.5-minute series, the most detailed series that is widely available from the USGS. The 1953 Southton map is a valuable historical record for the area. It contains some placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
