First published in 1905, this Oakesdale sheet was printed in 1938 and, having never been folded, remains smooth and flat with a flawless map area, in excellent condition on thick stock. This 30-minute quad straddles the Washington-Idaho line about 30 miles south of Spokane, taking in the farm towns of Tekoa, Rosalia, Garfield, and Fairfield along with portions of the Coeur d’Alene Indian Reservation and Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge. Engraved in 1905 under geographer E.M. Douglas, it captures the wheat country of the eastern Palouse as it was mapped early in the century, and this particular sheet has been rarely handled since its printing. The reverse carries printed reference material on reading the map.

A map summary is printed on the back side of the Oakesdale sheet similar to the one shown in the picture. It outlines the history, purpose, and status of the USGS mapping program at the time of the printing in 1938. It also provides instructions on how to read contour lines and a description of how they are used to depict the terrain. At the bottom of the page is a legend showing all of the symbols used to represent the cultural, relief, and water features found on the map.

This antique sheet is a 1905 edition of the Oakesdale Washington USGS topographic map. It is an authentic 88-year-old 1938 United States Geological Survey print in excellent condition.

Maps from the USGS 30-minute series have been out of print for many years. They have never been common and original prints are increasingly difficult to find. For areas where the 30-minute map was produced, it is usually the first large-scale survey done by the USGS for that area.
