This USGS 15-minute topographic map is an 1895 edition printed in 1956, in very good condition on thick stock, moderately handled and never folded. Covering a stretch of southwestern Colorado about 15 miles northwest of Durango, the quad takes in the La Plata Mountains and includes the communities of Mayday and Hesperus along with parts of the San Juan National Forest and the Menefee Mountain Wilderness Study Area. The base edition was surveyed in the field in 1895 and credits Henry Gannett as geographer, tying the sheet to the mining country of the La Plata district that drew prospectors to these high valleys in the late nineteenth century.
