Oraibi Arizona Second Mesa Shongopovi USGS Topo Map 1968
$42
This USGS 15-minute topographic map is a 1966 edition printed in 1968, on thick stock and in good condition, with no folds — the sheet was moderately handled and shows light age-toning and a few creases in the right collar. Covering roughly 14 by 17 miles in Navajo County about 75 miles northeast of Flagstaff, the quad takes in the Second Mesa area of the Hopi Indian Reservation, and its boundaries include Kykotsmovi Village, Shongopovi, Hotevilla-Bacavi, and Oraibi. Oraibi, which lends the quad its name, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in North America, and the map records the mesa-top villages and the surrounding high desert of the Hopi country at 40-foot contour intervals. It comes from the vintage map collection of Art Christiansen of Tempe, Arizona.

FEATURES SHOWN ON THE MAP
The Oraibi 15-minute map shows cities and towns, roads, railroads, utilities and energy infrastructure, rivers, creeks, elevation contour lines, public land survey lines, county, state, and other administrative boundaries as they existed at the time of the survey in 1964 through 1966. All known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are also shown.
A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the 15-minute series for the continental United States are no longer produced or printed by the USGS and original prints are becoming increasingly difficult to find. They are a valuable historical record for an area, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
