Printed in 1944, this Army Corps of Engineers 7.5-minute topographic sheet is a first-year print drawn from a 1942 and 1943 field survey, and the vintage sheet survives in very good condition on thick stock, never folded with a clean map area. Roughly 27 miles north of Santa Barbara in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Santa Barbara County, the quad takes in mountainous backcountry within Los Padres National Forest and parts of the San Rafael and Dick Smith Wilderness areas. It captures the rugged high country south of the Cuyama Valley as the Army mapped it during the war years, with 50-foot contours tracing the steep terrain.
