This USGS reconnaissance topographic sheet is an 1893 edition printed in 1900, an antique on thick stock that survives in very good condition, never folded and only lightly age-toned. Drawn at the 30-minute scale about 30 miles east of Colorado Springs, the quad takes in a stretch of the high plains east of the Front Range, with the communities of Yoder, Rush, and Ellicott falling within its boundaries across parts of El Paso and neighboring counties. It carries the work of geographer A.H. Thompson from an 1889 field survey, an early record of this open prairie country made when the USGS reconnaissance mapping program was still young; the reverse carries printed reference material from the period.

Maps from the USGS 30-minute series have been out of print for many years. They have never been common and original prints are increasingly difficult to find. For areas where the 30-minute map was produced, it is usually the first large-scale survey done by the USGS for that area. These are a valuable historical record, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent series’ and editions.
