This 1909 edition of the Charleston, West Virginia quad was printed in 1914, an antique sheet in excellent condition: very lightly handled, never folded, smooth and flat, on thick stock, with only hole punches along the left collar. Covering parts of Kanawha and Putnam counties, the quad area takes in Charleston, South Charleston, and Dunbar along the Kanawha River, with Cross Lanes, Sissonville, Malden, and Big Chimney also within its boundaries. Engraved in 1909 under geographer Frank Sutton from a 1907 field survey, the map records the state capital and its surrounding river valley as they stood a century ago, and it comes from an uncommonly well-preserved collection. The reverse carries printed USGS reference material.

A map summary is printed on the back side of the Charleston sheet similar to the one shown in the picture. At the bottom of the page is a legend showing all of the symbols used to represent the cultural, relief, and water features found on the map.

All known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are also shown, with exceptions in some urban areas, where only landmark buildings may be shown.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the 15-minute series for the continental United States are no longer produced or printed by the USGS and original prints are becoming increasingly difficult to find. They are a valuable historical record for an area, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
