Cottonwood Spring California USGS Topo Map 1973 Vintage
$44
This USGS 15-minute topographic map is a 1958 edition printed in 1973, in excellent condition on thick stock. It takes in part of the southern reaches of Joshua Tree National Park in Riverside County, California, about 15 miles east of Mecca, and its bounding box also crosses into portions of the Orocopia Mountains and Mecca Hills Wilderness areas. Drawn from a 1938 through 1958 aerial and field survey completed before Interstate 10 existed, it records this stretch of desert country as it was mapped in the mid-century, and having never been folded, the sheet lies flat.

FEATURES SHOWN ON THE MAP
The Cottonwood Spring 15-minute map shows cities and towns, roads, railroads, utilities and energy infrastructure, rivers, creeks, elevation contour lines, public land survey lines, county, state, and other administrative boundaries as they existed at the time of the survey in 1938 through 1958. All known structures (houses, businesses, churches, schools, barns, cabins, etc) are also shown.
A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the 15-minute series for the continental United States are no longer produced or printed by the USGS and original prints are becoming increasingly difficult to find. They are a valuable historical record for an area, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
