This is a USGS/War Department topographic sheet on the 15-minute series, printed in its year of first publication, 1943, and in excellent condition on thick stock. Its coverage takes in Peachtree Valley and a stretch of the Salinas River in Monterey and San Benito counties, with the town of San Ardo falling within the quad boundaries. Surveyed in 1940 and 1941 under geographer T.F. Murphy, it reflects the interior ranch and farm country of central California as the mapping program stood during the war years, and having been lightly handled and never folded, it lies flat for framing. The reverse carries printed reference material explaining the mapping program and map symbols.

It outlines the history, purpose, and status of the USGS mapping program at the time of the printing in 1943. At the bottom of the page is a legend showing all of the symbols used to represent the cultural, relief, and water features found on the map.

This vintage sheet is a 1943 edition of the San Ardo California USGS topographic map. It is an original 83-year-old United States Geological Survey print in excellent condition.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the 15-minute series for the continental United States are no longer produced or printed by the USGS and original prints are becoming increasingly difficult to find. They are a valuable historical record for an area, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent maps.
