Printed in its year of first publication, this 1948 Newark sheet is a first-year print of the USGS 7.5-minute topographic series, in very good condition—lightly handled and never folded, on thick stock. The quad covers part of the East Bay in Alameda County, taking in Fremont, Newark, Union City, and Hayward, along with tidal flats now part of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. It captures the southeastern shore of the bay as it looked in the late 1940s, before much of the postwar growth that reshaped these towns. The reverse carries printed USGS reference material. The map area is smooth and flat with a flawless surface, and having never been folded, it lies flat for framing.
