Printed in its year of first publication, 1905, this USGS 30-minute topographic sheet was engraved that same year by geographer E.M. Douglas and remains in very good condition on thick stock, with light handling, quarter-inch midsheet foldlines, and foldline separations stabilized with clear archival tape on the reverse. Drawn from an 1903 and 1904 field survey, it takes in the lower California coast around Santa Maria, with the quad boundaries including Guadalupe, Lompoc, Casmalia, Betteravia, and the shoreline that would later become Vandenberg. A sheet of this vintage predates much of the coastal development the area saw through the twentieth century, showing the Santa Maria Valley and its dune-backed shore as they were surveyed at the turn of the century. The reverse carries printed reference material on the mapping program and how to read the contour lines.

BACKSIDE LEGEND
A map summary is printed on the back side of the Guadalupe sheet similar to the one shown in the picture. It outlines the history, purpose, and status of the USGS mapping program at the time of the printing in 1905. It also provides instructions on how to read contour lines and a description of how they are used to depict the terrain. At the bottom of the page is a legend showing all of the symbols used to represent the cultural, relief, and water features found on the map.

This antique sheet is a 1905 edition of the Guadalupe California USGS topographic map. It is an authentic 121-year-old United States Geological Survey print in very good condition.

A VALUABLE HISTORICAL RECORD
Maps from the USGS 30-minute series have been out of print for many years. They have never been common and original prints are increasingly difficult to find. For areas where the 30-minute map was produced, it is usually the first large-scale survey done by the USGS for that area. These are a valuable historical record, as they contain many placenames and features that have been dropped from more recent series’ and editions.
