This USGS 15-minute topographic sheet is a 1902 edition printed in 1965, in excellent condition on thick stock, lightly handled and never folded. It covers a stretch of the North Carolina coastal plain about 45 miles east of Raleigh, taking in the city of Rocky Mount along with Wilson, Nashville, Red Oak, Sharpsburg, Elm City, and Dortches across Edgecombe, Nash, and Wilson counties. The base was drawn from a 1902 field survey under geographer H.M. Wilson, so it reflects how this tobacco-country landscape was mapped at the turn of the century, with the map area itself flawless and the collar carrying a small black marker notation. Because the sheet lies flat and was never folded, it takes well to framing.
